Most young salesmen start out with success as else they don’t keep on working as a salesman. More deals closed and more sales resulting in more or higher commissions. The sky is the limit for many.
The Death of a Salesman #1
If he can’t make it to sales manager or VP Sales he will stay as salesman. In most cases the same goods or services as he will stay within the same industry or solution type. During his career as salesman will become older and becomes less successful due to the younger generation kicking in and becoming his competition. Moreover the buyers will also become of a younger generation who prefer to buy from people of their own generation. This is when the salesman dies for the first time. His days of glory are over.
He might keep his current job and maybe his status, but normally he will need to have less commission as he closes less deals. It is likely he will have to take a less important sales job or with a less leading company.
The Death of a Salesman #2
He starts to become too old and he has become ‘outdated’. Traveling becomes hard to do. Being much older than his colleagues, less competitive and ‘has seen it all’ and has no excitement anymore in closing deals. It is likely he will get fired which means he dies for the second time in his life.
How many times have you died as salesman already ?
